Photo of a tree and root system that the author sees on a daily basis when walking her dogs in Rotherfield. The roots are covered in moss and the autumn leaves are on the ground. There is some mistletoe, brambles and other plants and root systems in the picture with some weak winter sunshine peaking through part of the trees branches.

As I stroll through the serene forests of East Sussex with my two dogs, Izzy and Tess, I’m constantly reminded of nature's wisdom. Watching the trees extend their branches skyward, firmly rooted in the earth, reveals an intricate network of support—each tree part of a larger, interconnected system. Lately, as I listen to The Hidden Life of Trees by Peter Wohlleben, I find myself seeing trees in a new light, noticing profound lessons they offer about family, community, and support.

Trees as a Community: Lessons on Connection

In his book, Wohlleben emphasizes that trees are not solitary beings; they live in communities and rely on each other. Through their roots, trees communicate, share resources, and, surprisingly, even form family-like bonds. Beneath the forest floor, roots intertwine, allowing trees to nurture and support one another. If one tree struggles, nearby trees extend their roots to offer stability and resources. Trees shield one another from harsh weather, working together to survive and flourish.

This quiet cooperation is a powerful reminder of the strength found in family and community. Just as trees depend on a network to thrive, we, too, need people around us who uplift and support us. Family isn’t always defined by blood; it’s built through connections with those who offer strength, shelter, and encouragement. Trees show us that to thrive, we need to surround ourselves with those who bring positivity and resilience during life’s storms.

Observing Forest Wisdom in East Sussex

In Rotherfield, where I’m fortunate to live in an area of outstanding natural beauty, I see this symbiotic relationship daily. Along one of my favourite trails, I often notice exposed tree roots, a testament to their strength and interconnectedness. The forest is a sanctuary for wildlife and a living example of the importance of a support network. Each tree plays a role, providing shelter to the animals, insects, and plants that rely on it—a powerful reminder that none of us can truly thrive alone.

Walking with Izzy & Tess: Reflecting on Nature’s Lessons

As I walk with Izzy and Tess through these woods, I reflect on nature’s gentle wisdom. Just like the trees, our well-being depends on the people we choose to keep close. In an increasingly disconnected world, it’s vital to nurture relationships with those who help us grow, who offer support in challenging times, and who, like the roots of the forest, help us stand strong through life’s toughest moments.

Who Makes Up Your Root System?

Take a moment to consider: Who are the people in your life that form your root system? Are you surrounded by individuals who uplift and nurture you, who provide strength when you need it most? Like trees, we must be mindful of our support systems, ensuring they are as resilient and positive as the forest communities that thrive around us.

As you go about your day, remember the trees and their quiet, enduring support networks. Let them inspire you to build and nurture your family, community, and friendships, so you, too, can stand tall, no matter what challenges arise.

Celebrate National Tree Week

As National Tree Week (23 Nov – 1 Dec) approaches, it’s the perfect time to celebrate the importance of trees and their communities. Consider planting a tree in your garden or sponsoring an event to raise awareness. By giving back to nature, we honour the support

systems that trees and forests offer us all. The book can be purchased here.
