Before co-founding ACSIS Life Coaching, Sam was a PADI Scuba Instructor, teaching individuals to explore the underwater world safely. She then went on to complete the Military SADS (Sub-Aqua Diving Supervisor) course whilst serving in the Army. The lessons learned beneath the waves—about preparation, trust, and adaptability—shaped not only her time in the military but also her approach to life coaching.

Here’s how these principles, rooted in the essentials of scuba diving, translate into navigating life’s challenges and opportunities.

The Power of Preparation: Plan Your Dive, Dive Your Plan

In scuba diving, preparation is non-negotiable. Equipment checks, dive plans, and safety briefings are critical to ensuring a successful dive. This principle applies just as strongly to life:

  • Define Your Goals: Like planning your dive route, knowing your objectives helps you stay focused and purposeful.

  • Prepare for Challenges: Unexpected currents or visibility issues in the water mirror life’s uncertainties. Preparation helps you adapt and respond effectively.

At ACSIS, we bring this mindset to coaching by helping clients identify their goals, assess potential obstacles, and build strategies to overcome them.

Buddy Checks: Trust and Teamwork

Scuba divers never dive alone—it’s a rule as vital as the air in your tank. Buddy checks reinforce mutual trust and ensure everyone is ready before plunging into the deep. This concept is equally powerful in life:

  • Build a Support Network: Whether in personal or professional life, having a “buddy” to lean on can make all the difference.

  • Check-In Regularly: Just as divers inspect each other’s equipment, checking in with your friends, family, or team ensures everyone is aligned and supported. The OK signal (👌) underwater is used regularly: are you OK? why not use the signal to silently check-in with your circle?

In the military, this practice becomes second nature, fostering camaraderie and collective accountability. As coaches, we act as trusted “buddies,” providing the tools and encouragement needed for your journey.

Adaptability: Expect the Unexpected

Underwater, conditions can change in an instant. A sudden current or a malfunctioning regulator demands calm, quick thinking, and adaptability. In life, the same applies:

  • Stay Flexible: Plans might not always go as expected, but maintaining a solution-oriented mindset helps you adjust course.

  • Embrace Resilience: Facing setbacks with composure and persistence builds confidence and fosters growth.

At ACSIS, we encourage clients to develop an adaptive mindset, using frameworks like the Ladder of Perception to reframe challenges and uncover new possibilities.

Life-Sustaining Lessons: Carry Your Own Air

Scuba diving emphasises personal responsibility—each diver is accountable for their equipment and air supply. This principle extends to personal growth:

  • Take Ownership: Your success depends on your effort, mindset, and willingness to take action.

  • Be Prepared to Pivot: Life, like a dive, is unpredictable. Carrying the right tools—knowledge, skills, and support—ensures you can navigate unexpected scenarios.

From the Deep to Everyday Life: Coaching Lessons at ACSIS

Sam’s journey from diving instructor to military leader and now life coach underscores the importance of preparation, trust, and adaptability. At ACSIS Life Coaching, these principles guide our approach:

  • Prepare for Change: We help you define your goals and anticipate potential challenges.

  • Build Relationships: Trust and accountability are central to our coaching partnerships.

  • Stay Flexible: We use adaptive strategies to meet your unique needs as you progress.

Just as Sam taught divers to navigate the ocean’s depths, we empower clients to explore their potential and tackle life’s uncertainties with confidence and clarity.
